Target Demographics
Well, since I updated so early last time, I figured I was allowed to update a little later this time. Anyway, I really wonder sometimes about Nintendo’s target demographic. Yesterday I saw two women in power suits (of the business variety, not the Samus Aran variety) walk out of J&R Music World. One of them pulled a copy of Wii Play out of her bag and said “Yep! It’s got 9 games on it. I can’t wait to get home and try them all out. Do you want to come over after work?” Now, these are women in their 30s who work in the financial district.
At first I was angry because I thought that Nintendo had completely disregarded the hardcore gamer in favor of people like these two women. Coincidently, I found myself heading to Rockefeller Center to pick up the first season of Heroes and some The Office merchandise from the NBC Experience Store. I stopped in at Nintendo World and played with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for a little bit and was absolutely astounded by how much fun it was.
So I’m left to wonder, has Nintendo really forgotten about the hardcore gamer? There’s no way those two women would be playing Metroid. Maybe Nintendo can cover all of these different people. Either way, I’m still torn on the notion of so many people being able to consider themselves gamers. I figure I’ll be okay with it eventually. I think it might just be the elitist in me wanting to keep our “club” exclusive. But then I think about all of my friends who aren’t gamers and how much I would love to sit and play something with them.
Also, I gave Inky a poster of Dali’s The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory in his room because it’s the one I wanted. Unfortunately I had to settle for the plain old Persistence of Memory. Oh well.
‘Til Friday.
